INFLUENCE: For Better or Worse (1 Kings 11:1-16)

Who is the most influential person you know? Why are they so influential? How have they used their influence for other's benefit? How have they used it for their own benefit?

Read 1 Kings 11:1-6

How is Solomon's temptation in 1 Kings 11:1 a reflection of his father David's sins?

In verse 2, God told the Israelites not to intermarry because their spouses would turn their hearts toward idolatry.

Did God's prediction come true? (read verses 3-6) Why do you think Solomon was so easily swayed into idolatry? Why do you think spouses hold this kind of influence?

How has your family influenced you positively throughout your life? How has your family influenced you negatively? What are you doing to be a positive influence on your spouse and children?

Apparently, Solomon's wives were able to influence him more significantly than God's law. What things in your life have the potential to have a greater influence on you than God's law? How might your family get in the way of you serving God?

The people with whom you spend the majority of your time, will be the ones who influence the majority of your life. What character traits should you look for in the people who influence you? How can you be a positive influence on those around you?

How can you tell whether or not you are influencing someone or being influenced by them?

What can this group do to be a more positive influence on your life? What can you do this week to be a positive influence on this group?
